A local conservation architect (and former Mutchmor parent) recently prepared a Heritage Value Statement for the school building.
History
Mutchmor History
Named for a soldier, built on a racetrack, Mutchmor Public School has served Ottawa children in three centuries. It is the city’s oldest elementary school, and one of the last monuments to a premiere architect of the gaslight era.
It is named for the family of John Mutchmor, an Upper Canada homesteader and veteran of the War of 1812. Descendents of pioneering Mutchmors included the club secretary of the 1904 Stanley Cup champion Ottawa Silver Sevens, and a 1964 moderator of the United Church of Canada.
Mutchmor - History Project
Mutchmor was built in 1895 with additions in 1911 and 1920. Here is an old photo of Mutchmor School taken Feb 3, 1945, by the Ottawa Citizen for this article. Notice the old style street light fixture and the chimney on the school which has since been reduced in height.
Do you have any photos of Mutchmor before 1945? We would love to see them! Please email us!
You can also read all about Ottawa schools in 1918 in this archived 1918 book and can read about the "manual training" boys would have received in 1901 at school here. At Mutchmor, the "manual training" rooms were in the basement and are used today as the daycare and French room.
We are working on gathering more info on the history and heritage of Mutchmor.
