Greening PDF Print E-mail

The Mutchmor Parent Council has launched an extensive initiative to “green” the Mutchmor Field which is located between Third and Fourth Avenues and behind Corpus Christi school. We will be planting trees, adding an outdoor classroom, improving soil quality and streamlining pathways and seating areas for children near the play structures. The project was initiated in response to the Emerald Ash Borer pest, an invasive species which threatens all Ash trees in our region, including many trees in the Mutchmor field. Our initiative has grown to look at the entire ecosystem of the field and its users in order to come up with sustainable solutions in the long term.

Here's the plan:  Greening Plan Rev 2

Donations of clothing, toys and equipment to Boomerang Kids in Old Ottawa South will support our Greening Plans for the Mutchmor play yards.  Boomerang Kids

On Earth Day we will be having a Jump-a-Thon to raise money for the outdoor classroom component of our Greening Plan.

EnviroCubs

In March 2010, the EnviroCubs club was asked to determine an appropriate site for a tree in the school yard next to Lyon Street. They had a fun time and did a great job while taking into consideration the canopy cover of adjacent trees, soil conditions, yard usage and the fenceline. Here are a few of their maps which they drew showing their prefered tree location:

Here is a letter they wrote after their experiences:
